Retirement, Vacation and Sick Leave


As a member of the Library's program implementation team, under the supervision of the division/circulation manager, this employee organizes and shelves materials; maintains ordered, neat condition of shelves; inspects returned material for damage; and assists with book processing, mending, and other associated tasks as assigned. This position may be in the Technical Services area of the Library's Support Services division, or in public services.


Organize and shelve materials according to the Dewey Decimal classification scheme and established Library procedure

Maintain Library shelves in ordered, neat condition

Locate and retrieve requested materials to fill hold requests

Assist in checking returned materials for damage

Mend/repair materials according to established Library procedure

Assist with end-processing and quality control of newly cataloged materials

Support general, daily business of the library, including meeting room setup and cleanup, program support, limited customer service, opening and closing procedures, and some clerical tasks as assigned

Make and implement decisions appropriate to a formalist system of ethics


High school graduate or GED preferred

Previous library or retail customer service experience preferred

Basic knowledge of library classification systems, alphabetization, and arithmetic

Attention to detail

Ability to problem-solve, multitask, and prioritize

Ability to follow through and complete assigned tasks

A commitment to public service and the ability to work effectively with a diverse patron base

Knowledge of and ability to implement Library Board policies and procedures

Understanding of the relationships and responsibilities of Library divisions and buildings

Understanding of Library mission and roles, and the general role of public libraries within a community

Understanding of foundational library documents, including the Library Bill of Rights, Code of Ethics, and the Freedom to Read Statement


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, sit, talk, hear, crouch, crawl, balance, reach, stoop, and kneel.  Must use hands and fingers to operate a computer.  The employee is regularly required to lift up to twenty-five pounds, and occasionally up to fifty pounds.  The employee must be able to remove library materials from shelves at a maximum height of six feet and push library carts weighing up to 175 pounds.  Must be able to move about the work area, talk clearly with customers, and hear customer responses.  Must have excellent close vision and good distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 


While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a library public service or support services environment. 

Employees must be able to work rotating shifts (seven days a week) and flexible hours (morning, afternoon, evening, and holiday hours) when the Library is open.  All employees will work up to two evenings per week and will alternate weekend shifts with the other employees in their division. Employees will also work holiday hours of equal proportion to those of other employees in their division.
